CD Projekt announced today their new RPG based on Mike Pondsmith's Cyberpunk.
A new team formed from Witcher personnel will be developing the sci-fi RPG, which will "have all the hallmarks of the Witcher series" that the studio is known for. As with Witcher, expect a non-linear narrative characterized by mature themes and morally ambiguous situations.
In the Cyberpunk universe, players will once again be allowed to customize their characters as they navigate a world of mercs and hackers. Cybernetic implants and futuristic weaponry will be at our disposal, and player actions can shape the world for better or worse.
The inspirational material, Cyberpunk 2020, is created and written by "Maxmike" Pondsmith and debuted back in 1988 under R. Talsorian Games. The series has since become associated with a very glamrock aesthetic. Guess that explains this guy's mohawk.
Pondsmith commented on the upcoming video game based on his pen-and-paper series:
"For over two decades, I’ve been proud to say that Cyberpunk’s been the gold standard of what it means to be a true cyberpunk game. And it’s been a huge success for me and our many fans, with over 5 million players worldwide. But over all that time we haven’t found the right team to bring our cyberpunk world to full digital life -- until now. CD Projekt Red is the team we’ve been hoping for. Their incredible work on The Witcher and The Witcher 2 shows that they share the same dedication and love of great games that we do at Talsorian. I’m especially stoked that they want our participation in making this game a fantastic project that will live up to everything Cyberpunk fans (old and new) have been waiting for. Trust me -- this game is going to rock."
To be clear, CD Projekt's RPG hasn't been officially titled Cyberpunk; the name simply refers to the Pondsmith's franchise and universe. Although the developer will be at E3 this year, their just-announced project won't.
