In the newest Transformers: Fall of Cybertron trailer, game director Matt Tieger finally unveils the new origin story behind the Dinobots, which effectively explains how the heck dinosaur Transformers end up on Cybertron.
In the G1 cartoon, Dinobots were created on Earth, long after the Transformers made a new home for themselves here. In High Moon Studios' Cybertron series, Earth really hasn't become a major part of the equation yet. Until now, anyway.
Turns out, the Dinobots in Fall of Cybertron weren't actually Dinobots before. Unfortunately for them (and fortunately for us), they wind up captured by Shockwave, the mad scientist of the Decepticons. Interestingly enough, Shockwave has found a way to open up "space bridges" across the galaxy, a technology he uses to find other planets that can support life. See where this is going? That's right, children, he finds primordial Earth, and collects from it data on dinosaurs.
The whole point here was to create a new breed of powerful Transformers to serve the Decepticons, but that plan totally backfires.
