Over the past few weeks, Ron Gilbert and Double Fine have been leaking puzzling images with a character apiece. 7 characters in total, made up of the knight, the scientist, the twins, the time-traveler, the hillbilly, the adventurer and the monk. And it's these seven characters that will be the protagonists of Double Fine's new game The Cave. Introducing a side-scrolling adventure title, said be a mixture of Maniac Mansion and Metroidvania, scheduled for PC release in 2013.
The Cave will actually play out a lot like Trine. Players pick three out of the seven heroes and venture down into the cave. Switching from character to character is as easy as pressing a button, or playing with three gamers locally is also an option. Naturally, the cave is more than it seems -- in fact it's the only fully voiced character in the game and will narrate the entire adventure.
Much like any adventure title, items will be picked up, puzzles will be solved, and a deeper story will be uncovered (different for each character to boot). What's at the bottom of the cave? Time will tell, and it's sure to be a long wait until The Cave's release in 2013.
