Because the world could do with more free online shooters, Mercenary Ops is starting up their closed beta testing in June, and applying is surprisingly easy.
This free third-person multiplayer shooter from Yingpei Games -- formerly Epic Games China -- will start testing June 20. For a chance to be accepted into this phase, all you need to do is "Like" the game on its Facebook page. Now this doesn't actually guarantee access, but it does put you in the running.
Mercenary Ops is set in the near future when corporations have cause humanity to collapse on itself. Now elite mercenaries are pitted against each other in the never-ending struggle for wealth, power, and survival. An emphasis on tactics and competitive play is the game's main selling point.
During the beta, players will have access to six game mdoes over an unspecified number of maps. Competitive matches is obviously a thing, but you'll also find eight-player co-op missions open for testing. Though Merc Ops will rely on a microtransaction system for revenue, producer Jason Sharp notes that everything in the store -- customizations and special upgrades mostly -- will also be available through the game's loot system.
“Balancing is always a major concern when it comes to online shooters, especially when they are free-to-play. Because of this, we have committed heavily to testing the game internally and have even invited some of the world’s best professional gamers for their invaluable feedback. With the launch of our closed beta we will have the chance to garner even more feedback, this time from general shooter fans."
Expect to see Merc Ops on PC this summer.
