Diablo 3 to sell 3.5 million units this year, expects analyst

A Stern Agee analyst believes Diablo III will mirror the commercial success of its predecessor by selling 3.5 million units in 2012 alone.

Arvind Bhatia states that publisher Activision Blizzard’s Q1 FY12 financial results, which will be released on May 9, is due to meet street expectations. He also notes that the company's forthcoming action RPG Diablo III can ensure that stock pricing soars following its release this month.

In his industry note, Bhatia said despite Diablo III launching "after a gap of 12 years," it holds the "potential to sell more than 4 million units life-time, including 3.5 million units this year." Furthermore, he said that Diablo II sold an accumulative of four million units by August 2001, which was 14 months after its June 2010 release.

Diablo III is due for a worldwide launch on May 15.

I bet about 1/4th of the WoW players will buy it, many not even knowing what a diablo game is like. Then a whole bunch of fans + people who are completely new to it. 4 million sounds about right.

I brought 2 copies already, I'm not even kidding

preordered one in 2011 for £20, then prepurchased the digi download because the hard copy wouldnt arrive till 4 days after release

To be honest I played the beta and wasn't really impressed, it's nice to get a sequel to D2 but meh.

I won't be part of the 3.5 mill figure purely due to two games 1) TERA online is currently sapping all my gaming time and 2) Torchlight II

Though I do believe D3 will easily surpass that 3.5 mill figure, no doubt about it

ShadowJ, I am with you on the whole Torchlight II thing. I am getting that instead of Diablo III.. The open beta put me off big time. The game itself was alright but the logging in to a server to play a single player game wasn't fun. I will find Torchlight II much more fun as A. It's cheap and B. There is no always on DRM to contend with, the latter instantly makes it a better game.

It is a single player game sure it has co-op but so does every other game these days, it doesn't make them no longer single player if one chooses to play them that way.
