Kickstarter scam 'Mythic' canceled, reached almost $5K in pledges

Kickster is truly a godsend for many independent developers looking to get their ideas out and games made, but it was only a matter of time before ill-intentioned criminals took notice of the site's money-making potential.

Such was the case with the person (Persons?) behind Mythic: The Story of Gods and Men, a make believe game that managed to garner 83 backers and $4,739 in pledges before it was canceled by the project creator this past weekend. 

The Mythic Kickstarter was initially asking for $80,000 in donations, on behalf of a developer named "Little Monster Productions," which the creator(s) claimed to be comprised of former Blizzard, Activision, Disney, and Pixar employees. A tier of prizes was laid out, starting at $5 and going up to $10,000. The top reward was to be two (real) custom swords and a trip to next year's GDC in San Francisco. 

This would all be incredibly hilarious if it weren't so sickening. We're fortunate that a few vigilant Internet-goers recognized the stolen artwork all over Mythic's Kickstarter page -- some with piss-poor editing -- and exposed the whole thing as a scam before any money could be exchanged. 

A fairly happy ending, and no one got hurt. However, we're certain this won't be the last scam we see on Kickstarter, and the next one may not be so laughably obvious. Be careful out there, folks.
