3 million units?

Sequel confirmed. Can't effing wait, DI is one of those rough diamond games that could really benefit from a sequel.

Is it me, or are there a lot of GOTY editions coming out? How many games of the year can there be? Or does a game not actually need to have been game of the year to do so?

I think it depends on platform & genre, either way I'm not complaining. These are some awesome games getting GotY Editions.

Honestly? I wouldn't consider Dead Island to be a great game, but a pretty decent game with much room for improvement and carries much, much potential. Still, I think I'll skip out on this GOTY, though I'd be happy to see a sequel.

SPAZwazza Any game can claim to be GOTY as long as they've been nominated for or won the award from somewhere. Try to compile a list of every single gaming media outlet out there. See how many potential GOTY awards that creates?

Basically any AAA title or high profile game is guaranteed to have a GOTY release down the road. Most importantly, it's an obvious opportunity for profit way after launch. Consumers benefit as well, because you're getting a full game and DLC at a much cheaper price; a lot of people wait for the inevitable GOTY editions rather than pick games up full price at launch, then pay for subsequent DLC.

There can be at least 8 genre based GOTY's + 6 platform based GOTY's, though this is multiplied by the amount of gaming websites online. It only takes one to award it GOTY to allow them to legally call it one..
