I will usually side with anyone against EA, but I don't see them bundling these games and calling them indie as a damaging thing. Seems like yelling for yellings sake tbh. If the games were still developed by Indie Developers does it not make them Indie games?

oni - Under your statement then, Portal was an indie game. Indie games are games made AND produced by an INDEPENDENT group, hence the name indie. To DEPEND on EA to get it out there no longer makes it INDEPENDENT.

sir Astrix Fair enough, but what is the harm in calling them indie. It's not like people base game purchases solely off the Indie in front of the name, and if they do they are pretentious assholes.

Eh, Notch going kind of hipster with the word indie here. The games EA is advertising here were like, mostly, err... probably developed independently. Developed, but not published independently. Ah, I give up this is a silly argument. hahaha

oni, the harm is respect. If this group is busting their balls to get their product known, and this one is getting it done for them, who do you respect more? It's the same as you working for everything in your life compared to someone else getting it handed to them. Would you feel they are your equal since they didn't earn it? By calling them "indie", your saying that the people who work hard to be known are equal to those who are just getting it handed to them.

Here's an example:

Galaxy Empires vs Bastion

Galaxy Empires is an indie game with only ~30 likes on Facebook and only people who know the developers in some way have heard about it.

Bastion on the other hand was made by an indie group then published through Steam. They were a top selling game for a while in the Steam Store.

Now how can you say they're equal?

Naming something 'indie' when it is clearly not is just plain dishonest. People base their purchases off what their developers and publishers, so saying they don't base their purchases off whether something has the word 'indie' next to it (in addition to being mass-marketed by EA) is just plain foolish.

Indie MEANS Independent. If someone is backing them, then they aren't Independent, now are they. oni_hero, by calling them "Indie", that is a form of libel.

"If language is not correct, then what is said is not meant; if what is said is not meant, then what must be done remains undone; if this remains undone, morals and art will deteriorate;
if justices goes astray, people will stand about in helpless confusion. Hence there must be no arbitrariness in what is said. This matters above everything." - Confucius

Leave it to neoseeker for some to throw philosophy in place of legality.

ctrl Our readers are an erudite bunch.

Regarding the article, I don't feel particularly strongly about the matter, but it's obvious that EA's use of "indie" was a strategic maneuver. IMO there's no grounds to discount the games as being non-independent, but as far as the term "indie" is perceived, they're not very...

This is a bad example of how EA is ruining gaming. They've brought a bunch of independently developed titles out to the general public who didn't know about these games before.

Sure, it's popular to hate EA, but at least come up with something that really is "EA destroying gaming".

I honestly don't see what the huge deal here is...I'm all for calling things by their rightful name but really, why is it such a big deal when something was labelled "indie" when it's not? And, to be fair, a lot of these games did start out as independent titles. Now I'm not saying they're necessarily indie any more but I hardly think the article is something to yell and stomp around about.

The way I see it, games that previously had little popularity because they weren't widely played now have the exposure to spread to more gamers and, hopefully, the funds to create sequels.

and yet you completely ignore the fact that Portal at the same time of it being released was at AAA title price (full price) and bundled with the Orange Box to gain maximum exposure...do me a favour and stop acting like Valve is God. (P.s I like Valve but they are no saints)

As much as I also like Notch, I believe he is riding the EA hate bandwagon.

Yes it is dishonest and disrespectful but it hasn't made every Indie dev shut up shop and close down the business. EA has always been the company to jump up and down in the grey area, this should be nothing new to people for them to pull...they haven't trademarked the term indie, they haven't scared off or bribed the indie devs and said "this is our turf"

At the end of the day you are fighting over the definition of Indie, I'm sure there's more things to worry about in life than that...not to mention this is a great offer from EA with very well made games and enjoyable ones at that.

Well EA is making an "indie" bundle, just for advertising their games or what ever, they dont have to name it an "indie" bundle because they arnt "indies"
I dont get the point of this notch is saying his opinion and we have to argue about it?
