My earliest childhood memories involve two games; the first was Duck Hunt and the second was Leisure Suit Larry. Now I hear that Al Lowe, original developer, writer and designer of the Leisure Suit Larry games, is back and trying to get Land of the Lounge Lizards remade? Consider me untrusting. Yet here's the Kickstarter, looking for $500,000 to make Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizards all over again, in HD.
Let's start off by clarifying that Al Lowe has been in retirement since 1998, after his final projects Leisure Suit Larry: Love for Sail! and Leisure Suit Larry's Casino. He tried to come back in 2006, and was supposedly well into development of Sam Suede: Undercover Exposure, but the team couldn't get publisher backing. The developers shut down and the project was put on permanent hiatus. Afterwards, Lowe basically essentially vowed never to return to the industry.
Apparently the relevance of Kickstarter changed his mind. He's coming back to work with Replay Games, developers of... Potty Racers. Inauspicious, to say the least. Still, here he is, following Tim Schafer's return to adventure games. The difference of course is that Tim is the head of a high quality development studio, and Lowe and Replay Games are, well, yet to be proven.
Personally, I don't want to see anymore Leisure Suit Larry. The original game has been remmade before and nothing from the franchise has been good since 1996. So I'm a little skeptical about the quality of a new HD remake. The "pitch video" Lowe and party has thrown together only seems to cement my skepticism. Check it out below and ponder with me whether this is the time or place for Leisure Suit Larry's return.
