Interested in the new SimCity? Well, we've got a bit of good news and bad news for you SimCity hopefuls. Let's start with the negative.
SimCity lead designer Stone Librande has revealed that the game will require a persistent Internet connection. According to Librande, this has less to do with DRM, however, and more to do with the game's player-driven economy, which requires an always-on connection to function. The emphasis on multiplayer, regional impact, and this player-dependent global economy means SimCity owners will need to be online for the game to work.
On a more positive note, an EA rep has confirmed that SimCity will not be exclusive to EA's Origin, meaning gamers will be able to buy the game through other digital platforms as well. That said, you will need Origin to actually run the game, regardless of where your copy came from. The list of retailers hasn't been finalized yet, but we won't be seeing the game until 2013 anyway, so there's plenty of time.
