Good for them. This may turn out to be a pretty good model for upstarts, indies or even existing developers.

I have concerns that many studios downplay how much they need as to not sound greedy. Tim Schafer has said many times it took $3 million to make Grim Fandango, so are games more efficient and cost effective to produce these days or was $400,000 the bare minimum for a game that won't suck? What concerns me is this concept avoids the publishers sure, but may stick them into more hot water with the fans if the project ends up not so great..

I agree with that concern. Is the donated money lost to the developer? I would hope not but it is possible that the game could fall through but then again that could happen with any investment, which is what a gamer is doing by donating. We are taking a chance that all turns out well.
