It's priced so high because the market have told Apple they are happy with the price. Over 15 million iPad 2's were sold last year at essentially the same price or higher if they got a higher capacity model.. The market is at fault.

erm, Sony does put such prices. Think of what the iPad is (Tablet PC) and what it's capable of doing. Now look at the Vita, how much is the Vita? $250. Games are about $30-50 and a memory card is $30+

I was actually debating on the handheld front whether to go with Nintendo 3DS, Sony Vita or something else.

The first 2 handhelds can't handle web surfing to save their asses. So that leaves Android and iOS. I decided the screen has to be as big as tablets go without being too cumbersome, and it has to be able to let me read manga without scrolling around or cropping. So Android was tossed out due to its widescreen aspect.

Also, Android has surprisingly few games based on Unreal engine, where the eyecandy is. The only Unreal game seen everywhere in Android game showcases is Dungeon Defenders, which, as a game, is a *bleep*ing joke. (I spent 15 minutes with it and then I was done with it forever!) And then you see all 20 title of games (literally that many) optimised for Tegra 2, none of them can be considered real games. More like casual casual games, which you cannot give two shits about unless you're stuck in traffic or a long line and bored out of your skull.

So, gaming wise, maybe you could get away with Sony Vita. But if you need to surf the web and post your anti-Apple vitriol online, you'd do well to look beyond a device with a screen the size of your palm.

If people are looking for a gaming system then the Vita is the only option. Though if people are after more than just gaming then the iPad 3 is going to be more for them.. The Vita is a very solid gaming system the thing is literally a portable PS3 so it's hard to match in that regard, it's just down to what people want from a device.
