Okay guys, we're sitting between three to four days' wait time now for Mass Effect 3, and BioWare has released the launch trailer to whet our appetites -- because we don't want this game badly enough already.
In addition to the trailer, we're also hearing a bit about the revamped reputation system in Mass Effect 3. Changes were made based on complaints regarding the system in Mass Effect 2, most notably the Charm options that many players felt forced them to go pure Paragon. While BioWare's Patrik Weekes notes these were intended to be "fun Easter eggs," many players did not see it that way.
As such, the system will work differently in Mass Effect 3, and should give players more leniency in their decision-making. Weekes explained:
"In Mass Effect 3, your Reputation score determines both Charm and Intimidate options, and that score is determined by adding your Paragon and Renegade scores together.
"If you see that you’re a bit short of hitting a new line, and someone has just said something like, 'Let’s head down to [that person's homeworld] and finish this once and for all,' it may be worth your time to go do a couple of side-quests first."
In the third game, your reputation can grow with each decision, but that won't necessarily alter Shep's Paragon-to-Renegade ratio. In short, Mass Effect 3 measures the entire reputation meter instead of the two separate bars, and new dialogue options can be unlocked without having to grind either side.
Now if you're done reading, go ahead and watch that trailer we talked about. The music you hear is, appropriately enough, "Protectors of the Earth" by Two Steps from Hell. Epic, sure, but do you dig it more than the Mass Effect 2 "Fight for the Lost" launch trailer?
Wait, did anyone else see Joker standing? Who's that shadowy figure beside the Illusive Man? What is happening here?
