South Park has seen its share of licensed shlock over the years, the majority of it deviating from the original look and art direction. South Park: The Game, conversely, will be going the authentic route, according to Obsidian Entertainment CEO Feargus Urquhart, who says it's got the approval of series creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker.
"It came down to...if we can't make the game look like South Park, then why make it? There's been a lot of South Park games, 3D versions of Cartman, all that kind of stuff, but if it can't look exactly like the TV show, then this wouldn't be the South Park game. [Our first goal] was 'go make this look exactly like South Park'."
"We took [our prototype] to South Park [studios] and showed it to Matt and Trey. Matt immediately picked up the controller and started running around, and it was like playing the show, he said. He even went right up to the screen and said 'wow, that's the construction paper!' Then we really knew we'd hit the look."
South Park: The Game is releasing sometime next year on consoles and PC.
