At least Skyrim deserves its success. Don't get me wrong, I can enjoy a CoD game but one per year is a bit too much.

Sure, but one per year that still sells millions is still good.

Further, its very important to note that Treyarch and Infinity Ward have 2 years apiece for a Call of Duty game, not one.

True enough. Aside from zombies, the developers are hardly different though imo.

The CoD games are definitely well made, it's just a shame that their success isn't because of innovation. I'll take CoD 4 as the exception to the rule.

I'm wondering how much it cost to make? Probably at least $100 million, what with the new engine and all.

Games must be one the most immensely profitable things ever. At an estimate of $70 a unit, this is $245 million in revenue in two days. Add in some DLC and a few weeks of sales, you could easily pass $500 million. No-wonder games get such big budgets these days.

I remember people saying that $20 million was a huge budget to make Crysis on.

Hellfire29 It only seems that way because you only hear about the games that do well, not the hundreds that fail miserably or do just about enough to break even. Games have the potential to be extremely profitable, but they're also extremely expensive and risky to develop and publish, something only a relatively select few companies come out from as successfully as Bethesda has.

If you are a new developer you likely won't have a huge budget, so competing with companies like these that already have a fanbase is very difficult. But once you do get successful and keep it up you can see numbers like these appear. Then again, they have also put alot of money on marketing but they must be making quite a profit regardless.

chautemoc Yeah, it's a risk for a new franchise or a start up, but for a well known franchise like TES, any game regardless of quality is going to pull in the big bucks.
