Nearly two years ago we got a good look at a new Mechwarrior game with a lengthy gameplay trailer. Since then, we've heard virtually nothing, thanks at least in part to legal troubles. Finally, developer Piranha Games is back, spreading the good word: MechWarrior Online is the name of the game, a free to play PC-only game, but true to the series' legacy.
How much the title will resemble what we saw before is unclear, but several other details are available. Taking advantage of that 'Online' bit, you'll be able to run with a 'lance' (four-man squad) as a "mercenary corporation for hire" (four folks doesn't normally make a corporation, but hey, you're each about 20 men in one, anyway), complete with customizable aesthetics, battle formations, ranks, and more. Lances can team up together in battles in Conquest as well as various Deathmatch modes.
The microtransaction business model will be in use, but no items will offer a tactical advantage -- those will have to be earned. An upgrade system will be on offer, similar to the likes of previous Mechwarrior games, as well as Call of Duty and Diablo.
