GameStop's UK arm is pushing a new Trade-In Offer campaign where buyers can score themselves a copy of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 for just 99 pence... if they trade in a copy of Battlefield 3.
Doesn't that sound like someone's playing favorites already? They even made Battlefield 3 look smaller after shoving it into that little dark corner. It certainly looks like a hell of a way to stick to it Battlefield 3 and EA since the customer ultimately walks away with a copy of Modern Warfare 3, but once you get a better grasp of the way this offer works, you'll find both publishers aren't really losing out.
The discount on Modern Warfare 3 only applies if you trade in a copy of Battlefield 3 purchased from GameStop by preorder through its UK website before October 27th. That's because when the time comes for you to trade it back in for MW3, you'll actually need to mail it to GameStop before November 18th through a pre-paid envelope which they provide you.
Keep in mind that the discount is only good for copies of MW3 that were also pre-purchased online through GameStop's UK website, before November 7th, and will not be immediate; after mailing in your copy of Battlefield 3, GameStop will then refund your credit or debit card with £40.98. Note also that the PC version is completely exempt from this offer.
In other words, it's a sneaky if not roundabout way to get gamers in the UK to pre-order and purchase both games through their web store by leveraging the fact that Battlefield 3 launches a few weeks ahead of MW3. Heck it could even entice gamers to get Battlefield 3 if they previously had no desire to do so, since they can now take advantage of this offer to trade it back in for reimbursement on most of the cost of MW3 later.
To be sure, Battlefield 3 isn't exactly in dire straits over at GameStop; in fact, it's been consistently topping the retailer's pre-order charts in heated competition with MW3.
GameStop cautions it might get a little fussy about the condition of the instruction manuals and game covers when accepting the Battlefield 3 trade-ins. We imagine they'll be less concerned over whether or not you already used up the Online Pass to play Battlefield 3 online before mailing it back to them.
