Rumors of a Dead Island movie have been flying around for a while, and today, publisher Deep Silver announced that they've officially signed over film rights to Lionsgate. That's right, everyone: the Dead Island film is a go.
Few details are available right now, as the movie is still in the "early development stage with producers attached." Industry vets Sean Daniel (The Mummy, Tombstone, Dazed and Confused) and Stefan Sonnefeld will be leading production through the Sean Daniel Company, while Jason Brown and Missy Papageorge were named executive producers. Overseeing the project at Lionsgate is Alli Shearmur, the studio's President of Motion Picture Production and Development.
Lionsgate President and co-COO Joe Drake expressed his confidence in the game-to-movie adaptation, referencing the infamous debut cinematic featuring a young family being attacked by zombies.
"Like the hundreds of journalists and millions of fans who were so passionate and vocal about the Dead Island trailer, we too were awestruck. This is exactly the type of property we’re looking to adapt at Lionsgate – it’s sophisticated, edgy, and a true elevation of a genre that we know and love. It also has built in brand recognition around the world, and franchise potential."
