Hot on the heels of the ill-received shooter Bodycount, Codemasters has decided to close its Guildford studio, the ones behind that game and also the last two entries in the Operation Flashpoint series.
We called it like we saw it in our Bodycount review: "Not to say Codemasters couldn't whip out a better shooter in the future, but for now the racing games will be paying the bills." Indeed, the publisher will now be turning their focus entirely on racing titles, where their reputation has served them well.
The plan is to grow the teams at Warwickshire and Birmingham, who've worked on the DiRT, GRID, and F1 series'. As well, a new team is being formed in Birmingham to work on a new racing title; of the 66 staff at Guildford affected, seemingly all are "encouraged to apply for suitable positions" both there and on campus.
A slight shame the company won't be expanding its horizons anytime soon, but sometimes it's best to stick to what you know.
