One of the most anticipated MMOs in recent years will be playable at this year's gamescom. Yes, we're talking about Guild Wars 2. Much has changed between the first and second Guild Wars, in terms of story and gameplay, so ArenaNet is going over a few key points to prepare us for these changes.
Guild Wars 2 developer Jon Peters is the voice of authority in the latest post on ArenaNet's official blog. Players will notice off the bat that skills no longer cost energy, which tosses out energy potions. The former energy-potion button has been replaced by a dodge maneuver.
"We have a new long-term replacement for the other benefits that energy potions provided to our system, but since it is not in the game yet, we aren’t talking about it," says Peters.
The skills acquisition system has also been overhauled, as thei previous method "wasn't helping teach people the game," failing to effectively demonstrate how skills actually worked.
Of course, attendees will also be allowed to try the character customization in Guild Wars 2, which will let players adjust body types and a variety of other physical traits unique to each class -- asuran ears, charr horns, norn tattoos, and so forth. Not all customization categories will be unlocked for the gamescom demo, but what is available should give gamers a pretty good idea of how the final version will work.
In addition to PvE content, attendees can also access the first PvP map, the Battle of Kyhlo, a conquest map featuring siege weaponry and destructible environments.
Be sure to read the entire post. It's incredibly insightful, whether or not you'll be in Germany this week to try the game firsthand.
