The Disgaea series is still keeping console strategy role-playing alive, but one thing won't be living on in the upcoming English localization for Disgaea 4: A Promise Unforgotten.
Nippon Ichi Software's American branch confirms this week that it will be forced to remove some functionality out of the user-generated Map Edit system when it comes to the North American and European copies of Disgaea 4, due later this fall.
Specifically, North American and European users won't be able to build their own battle maps entirely from scratch like in the Japanese version. Instead, users outside of Japan will have to make do with making Disgaea's characteristic tile battlegrounds with pre-made shapes and forms instead.
Additionally, users will not be able to stack multiples of these shapes on top of one another when creating maps, although the series' trademark Geo Blocks and characters will still remain stackable in the North American/European Map Edit.
What's more, the map and character names created in the North American/European Map Edit will be randomized. Basically, users in North America or Europe won't be able to completely christen their own maps or characters the way they may want before sharing them with other players through Map Upload.
NISA producer Jack Niida explains why his company needed to remove all that map editing functionality from the English localized copies of Disgaea 4:
"Regarding Disgaea 4′s map edit system, regulation differences between regions made it very difficult to keep in.
"However, thanks to all the help from our development team and SCEA, we were able to keep the system by making just some minor design adjustments. Players won’t be able to create a completely detailed map, but this new system is still a great way to expand the Disgaea universe and share your own creations with players around the nation."
"Regulation differences" in this case could mean that NISA had a baaad feeling about what some players might have in store for their custom maps; perhaps they feared being forced to explain itself when some public outcry erupts over inappropriately themed Disgaea 4 maps online. Never underestimate your fellow player's desire to make maps curiously fashioned after genitalia, and that's just one of the tamer examples.
