December 15, 2011, marks the end of an era, when Sony Online Entertainment and LucasArts shut down their long-running MMO and trading card game, Star Wars Galaxies. SOE posted the announcement today along with a number of significant dates, listing each step in the progressive shutdown process.
Today marks the beginning, with the removal of subscription packs and the Trading Card Game store. Come September 15, the MMO and TCG will no longer be available for sale or subscription, and new or reactivate accounts will not be accepted after that date.
On October 15, billing will be turned off, replaced by free game trials. On December 15, the Star Wars Galaxies service ends, and shortly after on December 31, the free game trials will also be shut down.
SOE will be compensating active SWG subscribers by offering a fully-paid subscriber status at no additional cost for a number of other SOE online games, though the offer will only be valid between October 15 and December 31. In case you're interested in their Fan Appreciation package, the alternatives are Star Wars: Clone Wars Adventures, EverQuest, EverQuest II, Free Realms, and DC Universe Online.
You'll be able to redeem this offer starting October 15.
