With all the attention paid to the PC version of Battlefield 3 since its announcement, we've all been curious as to how the experience would translate to consoles, given how impressive it is on the lead platform.
The first bit of footage was actually shown last week in the Frostbite engine features trailer, but was craftily mixed in with PC footage by DICE to make the point that consoles can take it just fine. Well, now we have the first proper look as it debuted on Jimmy Fallon last night.
For the purposes of comparison, below we've got PC footage from the same section.
The console version finds itself somewhere in between the current generation and next, while the PC version looks next -- pretty much what we expected. Lower resolution and textures are some of the biggest culprits, though LOD distance and shadows, for example, are formidable. DICE Frostbite engine coder Christina Coffin reminds via Twitter this is pre-alpha footage and they're still improving graphics: in this very section they've already changed the level geometry and added "three destructible lights where the RPG guys are."
Editor's note: impressions have improved and been updated slightly based on exchanged higher quality YouTube footage.
