Telltale's Richard Iggo, gave us a few tidbits of the enticing new adventure The Walking Dead. Though he wasn't able to give us too much info -- more to come at this year's San Diego Comic-Con -- what he did give us made the game sound rather enticing.
The game adaptation will focus on a main character named Lee, and a seven year old girl he finds along the way named Clementine. Unlike the comic book hero Rick Grimes trying to get to Atlanta, this story will focus on the pair trying to escape Atlanta. We're not sure how the pair came to find each other but were told that Lee would be starting out in a prison transport truck (seems to be a trend in horror games these days) that ends up crashing when everything goes to hell in Atlanta. He then wakes up to find himself a free man, much to his surprise.
Walking Dead fans will be happy to hear that Telltale Games is working closely with series creator and writer Robert Kirkman to ensure the game is faithful to canon. It doesn't sound like Rick Grimes will be making an appearance in the game, but Richard said we should expect a few surprises along the way. When asked if the characters from the video game would appear in the comic book in the future, Richard stated, "That would be fantastic if that were to happen. However, it would be entirely up to [Robert] Kirkman. At this time we're not sure if that will happen."
As for the gameplay, this won't be your average run-of-the-mill zombie shooter. You will find the usual Telltale characteristics of action, puzzles, and most importantly a deep storyline. The development team is dedicated to fleshing out the characters, rather than fluffing up The Walking Dead with needless gore and violence. If they can pull it off, it will be a welcomed change of pace from the usual zombie hack 'n' slash bloodfest.
Unfortunately, we weren't able to see a demo in action, but we'll keep an eye out for more details later this summer. The five-episode Walking Dead series releases for the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC this winter.
