The NPD tallies the score for February 2011, and according to their monthly North American sales report, console industry sales were up 12 percent year-on-year; console software sales alone saw a 2 percent year-on-year growth, despite the fewer number of titles released last month compared to February 2010.
Unfortunately, sales for the portable platforms suffered an overall 27 percent year-on-year decline; the NPD Group attributed this slump to anticipation for the upcoming 3DS handheld due later this month in North America.
Several companies celebrated major milestones in February. Thanks to the 454,000 Wii consoles sold last month, North American sales for Nintendo's platform have reached the 35 million unit mark faster than any other console in U.S. history. The Xbox 360 however proved to be the best-selling console last month, with unit sales of 535,000, its best performance yet for a month outside of the more lucrative fourth quarter.
The best-selling Wii game of February, Ubisoft's Just Dance 2, pushed a very nice 554,000 units despite being on the market since last October. That's some serious staying power, typically the strength of stand out Wii games.
The Marvel vs. Capcom franchise also remains a perennial favorite with fighting game fans even after all these years, and Marvel vs. Capcom 3's second place finish on the NPD software top ten for February, ahead of Just Dance 2, only reinforces just how popular the series continues to be in North America. It certainly performed better than the other February newcomers, Mario Sports Mix, Bulletstorm and Killzone 3.
Yet the greatest milestone would be reserved for Activision's Call of Duty: Black Ops, which became the best-selling video game in the North American industry's history with lifetime-to-date sales of 13.7 million units as of last month.
