LG wants to block PS3 sales in US over Blu-ray infringement
ITC complaints claim PS3's built-in Blu-ray player violates patents held by LG
Hackers and code crackers aren't the only threat to Sony's PS3 business, as the electronics/console giant faces another courtroom brawl over the console's inner design. South Korea-based LG Electronics has fired back against the patent infringement claims levelled by Sony against its mobile phones and Blu-ray players, by filing complaints of its own which seek to block the sales of Sony's Bravia HDTV and PS3 consoles in the United States.
In two complaints filed last week with the U.S. International Trade Commission, LG claims that Sony's HDTVs and Blu-ray players (including the one built into the PS3) are infringing on no less than eight of its own patents. LG's Blu-ray patents in particular address ways to reproduce data stored on read-only devices, as well of methods for handling multiple data streams.
In additional to an "immediate investigation" into Sony, LG seeks to block the import of Sony's PS3 and Bravia HDTVs into the U.S. as a result. Meanwhile to secure financial compensation over patent infringement, the company is also making these claims in civil lawsuits filed against Sony in California's federal court over unauthorized use of inventions.

While sony did play a fairly large role in the creation of the core components there is more to a blu-ray player than the laser and disc. Many things from the physical design to special features can be patented.
