One feature you won't find on the NGP (Next Generation Portable), Sony's official PSP successor, is support for all those PSP games on the UMD media format. The NGP lacks a built-in UMD drive, instead supporting digital download titles and a new, flash card based game format proprietary to the new handheld.
It sounds like UMD owners are left out in the cold, but recall that it has been Sony's initiative to have publishers port as many PSP titles on UMD into PlayStation Store digital downloads as possible since the PSP go hardware first launched. Sony may not stop there for the NGP, however.
The publisher explains in an interview with Gigazine's online magazine that it is planning on re-releasing PSP games previously on UMD on the new game card format for the NGP platform. Because of rights issues, not all UMD titles in the PSP's extensive back catalogue will get the physical media treatment for the NGP. The only burning question now is what plans Sony may have (if any) to make the re-acquiring of back catalogue titles attractive on the NGP for current PSP owners.
