Final Fantasy Agito XIII renamed, old foes appear in Kingdom Hearts 3DS

Square Enix had a busy evening with their 1st Production Department Premier conference with plenty of details that'll please Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts fans.

The big reveal of the night was Final Fantasy XIII-2, the direct sequel to Final Fantasy XIII. It'll see the return of heroine Lightning along with a mysterious new female (there are some spoilers here so don't watch if you still haven't beaten XIII):

Japan and the US will see Final Fantasy XIII-2 released in 2011 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

The 3DS Kingdom Hearts game has been officially dubbed Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance and it'll star incarnations of Sora and Riku from the first Kingdom Hearts. Dream Drop Distance revisits familiar territories such as Traverse Town but Ansem and Xehanort make a sudden appearance. Sora and Riku also gained some wild-looking acrobatic moves:

Final Fantasy Versus XIII got its time in the spotlight with some new gameplay footage revealed. Prince Noctis serves as Versus' hero and he can have two party members with him to fight along with the ability to use magic, summon creatures, and use an ability called EX-ARTS. There's not much to glean on story-wise but we learn Noctis' father is denying Noctis' privilege to succeed him as king.

No release date was given for Versus but it still appears to be a PS3-exclusive at this point.

Final Fantasy Agito XIII has been renamed to Final Fantasy Type-0 and will be released in summer as a 2-disc game for the PSP. Type-0 features gameplay similar to that of Versus (though in a much bleaker setting) and should still be considered to be a part of the Fabula Nova Crystallis series that encompasses Final Fantasy XIII and Versus XIII.

Square Enix also made available a paid demo of Dissidia 012 Final Fantasy that unlocks Final Fantasy VII's Aerith as an assist character in the full version. Final Fantasy XI's Prishe was briefly revealed as a new character for the brawler.

Looks like Versus XIII is taking a step forward rather than XIII's steps back. Gameplay already looks a hell of a lot more exciting than XIII's hallways, hallways and more hallways approach. A return to the ability to actually control more than one party member during combat is also a welcome decision in my books.
Seems to be taking a few cues from Crisis Core for the combat, doesn't look like a bad decision as far as I can see.

Holy crap, Versus XIII looks amazing. As does XIII-2, for that matter. I thought XIII was a pretty damn good game, and I'm looking forward to a sequel.

The "Coming 2011" on XIII-2 thoroughly surprised me, though. That's a bit unusual, but I guess they've already got the engine and most of the character models and stuff. I'm gonna be a little bit sad if/when XIII-2 gets released before Versus XIII.

I loved FFXIII and I'm so glad they're bringing out a XIII-2. Unlike many other people though, I hope nothing is changed with the battle system, although they probably did do a little tweaks here and there.

All of these look amazing. I can't wait for Final Fantasy XIII-2 Final Fantasy Versus XIII, and Final Fantasy Type-0 especially.

I think with the XIII-2 battle system, they may make it so that you can switch between the other characters in battle, rather than controlling just the one character while the others are strictly AI.

Now that you mention it, that would be a good development. Being able to switch characters in battle would be helpful.

So I am like extremely in to Kingdom Hearts, and I'm really pumped about this new game. However, I've never really tried any final fantasy games, and I know they started in like the 80s. Is the game series worth trying? And if so, where should I start?

They're worth trying if you like RPGs, or the Role-Playing aspect of Kingdom Hearts. You could try any of them to start with, as each numbered entry is entirely different from the others. FFXIII is the latest game, so that may be a good starting point, or you have FFX on PS2, etc.
