[Update] Silent Hill 8 renamed 'Silent Hill: Downpour', details emerge
No more creepy snow-ash, hospitals or schools
When Konami announced yet another Silent Hill last summer, we were torn between "Yay!" and "But it's not the same without Akira Yamaoka..." Judgement is being withheld for the time being, but we do know the official name of Silent Hill 8 -- behold, Silent Hill: Downpour.
If the name is any indication, it's likely the whole snowy ash effect won't be making a return, and you'll instead find lots of water... possibly even heavy rain, as seen in the debut trailer. Cloudy skies are also more than likely.
Update: Okay, if you hadn't already guessed, water will be a major part of the game to create a heavier atmosphere. In addition to the rusty urban aesthetic, expect to see water pouring in random areas in an unusual manner. Downpour will also be adopting the psychological profiling mechanic from Shattered Memories, in which seemingly small decisions made by the player can affect the story.
Downpour protagonist Murphy Pendleton will only be allowed to carry one weapon at a time, and the warped monstrosities of Silent Hill will prove toughter than ever to overcome. And yes, the skewed camera angles are back.
Czech developer Vatra Games also promised a larger Silent Hill this time, with a greater emphasis on exploration. New locations are being added, while familiar horror staples like the school and hospital have been cut.

Silent Hill 2 (James)
Silent Hill 3 (Heather)
Silent Hill 4: The Room (Henry)
Silent Hill Origins: (Travis - for the PSP)
Silent Hill: Homecoming (Alex - originally titled 5, but was actually the 6th game, total)
Silent Hill: Shattered Memories (Harry - re-imagining of the original, but still technically the 7th game, total)
That makes "Downpour" (not a very scary name) technically the 8th in the series, though probably only the 7th that could be considered canon, since Shattered Memories does not share its events with the others.
I would actually LOVE a remake of 1-with the great new graphics they can use-I think that would BE AWESOME!
And technically, it is chronologically the 8th, because that just means which ones came out in what order. As I said, it is not the 8th "canon-wise," or in terms of being in line with continuity. Shattered Memories put a bump in that road.
BTW can't wait for the new SH!!! OK Homecoming did have a lot of flaws, especially when in his “other house” but i thought the storyline was ok and some of the effects were really quite cool! Don't get me wrong HC is not the best of the bunch by far, but like SH: The Room, it was something different and imaginative! Lets just hope that Downpour is thoroughly polished (both in mechanics as well as plot and psychology & mythology) when it is released!!
