Well, you know, Silent Hill: Homecoming was the spiritual V, and then there was.... there was.... uhm...

Silent Hill 1 (Harry)
Silent Hill 2 (James)
Silent Hill 3 (Heather)
Silent Hill 4: The Room (Henry)
Silent Hill Origins: (Travis - for the PSP)
Silent Hill: Homecoming (Alex - originally titled 5, but was actually the 6th game, total)
Silent Hill: Shattered Memories (Harry - re-imagining of the original, but still technically the 7th game, total)
That makes "Downpour" (not a very scary name) technically the 8th in the series, though probably only the 7th that could be considered canon, since Shattered Memories does not share its events with the others.

It's not chronologically the 8th, though. I mean, Origins was more of a prequel, and Shattered Memories a 'remake' much like Never Say Never was a redone version of Thunderball (James Bond is the only example I can come up with).

I'm certain Konami is aware, so it's likely the numbering is just for the sake of organization. I recall their explanation for no longer numbering the final Silent Hill games, which was to represent their departure away from the original Team Silent games.

I'm hoping this one will bring back elements of S H 1-2
I would actually LOVE a remake of 1-with the great new graphics they can use-I think that would BE AWESOME!

Well I'm just uncomfortable with inconsistent numbering in series, something we've already experienced with another survival horror series well known by Capcom.

It's acutally Silent Hill 6 (the other two games are just re-make). The number 6 stands for bad luck; watch out Konami SH games without Akira Yamaoka!

Well, it's a real shame that no one can make Silent Hill game which is as good as 3 or 2 Time will only tell....

That shot of Silent Hill does resemble the D.C. Wasteland at night...

Shattered Memories is the only remake. Thus, 8 is "technically" 7, not 6.

And technically, it is chronologically the 8th, because that just means which ones came out in what order. As I said, it is not the 8th "canon-wise," or in terms of being in line with continuity. Shattered Memories put a bump in that road.

Why does everyone keep saying shattered memories is a “remake?” have you even played the game? it is a continuation of Heather's psychological story after the events of SH3 where she goes a bit mad!
BTW can't wait for the new SH!!! OK Homecoming did have a lot of flaws, especially when in his “other house” but i thought the storyline was ok and some of the effects were really quite cool! Don't get me wrong HC is not the best of the bunch by far, but like SH: The Room, it was something different and imaginative! Lets just hope that Downpour is thoroughly polished (both in mechanics as well as plot and psychology & mythology) when it is released!!
