The lack of NFS: Hot Pursuit on Steam not only pointed out the limited nature of its service but also showed an arbitrary or discriminatory intention towards PC gamers to access equal level of service.....

It also has, somehow, shown again the nascent state of online PC service in terms of competition with retail businesses and of course, Steam still has a long way to compete with retail stores; it is also highly unlikely to entirely eliminate (as many speculate before) retail businesses even in an age of ubiquitous online services.....

Actually, I believe neoseeker recently did an article saying that Steam sales now surpass retail sales. Steam has a wider selection, cheaper prices, and is easier. I think people who deliberately choose retail over steam are just box collectors (like myself), but the box is only important if I really like the game.

Besides, many popular titles require steam to play whether you buy it through them or not. In reality, you're not buying a game anymore at retail, just the product key to activate it through steam.

I personally like this. I have had more problems then I can count with steam. In fact I once had it in 'offline mode' and it told me I could not start civ V because the servers were busy. It is bugs like that, that make me go out of my way to make sure my games are not on steam.

Steam isn't actually a very good system, merely the most popular.

I like and will always use steam because of the massive amount of travel I do and have to carry entire cases of CDs gets really old. I have not had ANY technical problems with steam itself (some with dragon age) and the largest reason I will always stick with steam is Team Fortress 2. With free updates and most of my friends on steam I will always use steam over physical copies of games.

Way to cut off the biggest Digital distributor. I and 64 friends of mine don't buy games unless there on Steam. But none of this matters i don't buy racing games i find them very boring.

Digital distribution service. Like an online shop for games where you download them rather than get a disc. Has a few other features, but that pretty much sums it up.
Possibly another question would be why, the answer is that it's cheaper.
