Fans of Nintendo's cult-favorite RPG series Earthbound (known in Japan as "Mother") have proven themselves to be some of the most faithful around, not to mention daring given the amount of energy that went into releasing the unofficial but totally awesome Mother 3 fan translation (available in downloadable format for unlicensed backup devices).
The sweet lovin' continues in a project from Azure Studios, a full fan-made RPG they are actually dubbing "Mother 4". The game certainly looks the part graphically, but the Mother series has also been held in high regard thanks to charming characters and story. Azure's Mother 4 is harder to judge on those merits given how early into development the title appears to be.
According to the developers, Mother 4 first emerged as a series of fan-made screenshots made in RPG Maker XP and posted on Mother series fansite Starmen.net as early as 2008. The screens got some seriously creative juices flowing, and from there the project became a reality. Fast forward to 2010, and Azure Studios (currently comprising of 12 team members) is still hard at work on Mother 4.
They're committed to producing as authentic a Mother experience as possible. Hell, they even got the Mr. Saturns. Mother 4 looks to be a PC title for the time being (in the spirit of "doujin" software), but it will be interesting to see if Azure (or the legion of Mother fans) decide to make it compatible with backup devices like the Mother 3 fan translation was, for even more portable Mother goodness.
