Sega dashes hopes of bringing their celebrated Valkyria Chronicles franchise back home to the PlayStation 3 by confirming that the newest, upcoming title in the series teased earlier this month will be in fact a PlayStation Portable title. Imaginatively branded Valkyria Chronicles 3, the PSP title introduces us to a new company of Gallian soldiers, or rather bad company.
Set amidst the events of the original PS3 title, VC3 puts players in command of squad 422 of the Gallian military, which just happens to comprise of deliquent/disgraced Gallian soldiers dubbed the "Nameless". The three characters revealed thus far all have number codenames; one female character will in fact a descendant of the fabled Valkyrur themselves, but naturally she doesn't know it yet. The Nameless get stuck with all the nasty jobs which might be deemed too "sensitive" for the regular army.
Producer Shinji Motoyama explained in an interview with Famitsu magazine that the decision to stick with the PSP platform for a third title came after the development team decided that a brand new PS3 title should warrant more standout innovations which they haven't exactly cemented as of yet. The developers also wanted to expand the series more on the PSP, which is a more convenient platform for players with a lot less time devoted to gaming. The gameflow is said to be less reliant on missions like in the second title, and will instead be closer to the first game and its story structure. In-game maps will be area-based like in VC2, but larger and more varied, and the character growth system introduced in VC2 will also make its return in new and improved form for the third title. Unfortunately, VC3 will lose any wireless multiplayer features.
VC3 is currently scheduled for release in Japan next January 27th, 2011. Will Sega of America have a special announcement for series fans outside of Japan by then?
