I love Apple to death, but the iPhone/iPod Touch for the most part can't compete with the DS as a true gaming platform.

I'm rooting for Nintendo. I'm certain they can do it.

I think now that Apple is really gearing up its SDK for ultimate innovation and looking straight at the future with amazing graphics API's and tools, I think you will see Apple will definitely give Nintendo a run for its money. I am confident Apple will prevail

Eh what? OpenGL 2.0 is supported on most modern smartphones and Flash 10.1 is rolling out to Google OS users in a month now :/ contrary to whatever Jobs has spun they base most of their SDK and code off of existing work. I'm failing to see how they feel it's competition when the devices price themselves so far out of regular consumer reach.

They'll bring a new market to life by being a bit more accessible compared to Sony and Nintendo but they're essentially in a different market. When they shake the image of fart apps and crude gaming in the majority of the marketplace they'll be able to move forward. The Droid suffers from the same issue, the few gems are covered by the piles of trash running around. We don't need 45 versions of tetris and bejeweled.

Nintendo will fail miserably considering its falling sale record in recent months (:

I belive Apple will give the big N a run for its money, but that's just better for us. Either Apple will step up its quality and compatibility, or Nintendo will make their hardware able to handle more stuff. In all likelihood both will happen, it's just a matter of who will get done first and best.

Nintendo is becoming aware of multimedia features in its DS console series.

So I do think that the next generation of DS will possibly be a 'multimedia console' like Sony PlayStation Portable (PSP) or even like iPhone, iTouch or Mini iPad to entice all sorts of gadget fan base.

At the same time, Sony and Apple will also continue to improve their products by combing versatility and portability with all sorts of new features.

All in all, Nintendo ought to adopt multimedia functions (perhaps even with optical drive) if the company truly wants to compete with Apple or perhaps Sony in the far-off future:)

P.S. I wonder why Microsoft still have not decided to produce portable gaming console. Think of Mass Effect, Halo and Gears of War on the go???

Yeah Microsoft could definatly make some money in the portable gaming market and i'd be on bored with with. Of course they're probably looking at a lot of technologies and are looking for the best possible option.
(Of course they could also announce one at E3)

They're already entered the market with the Zune and Zune HD. They recently upgraded their offering with the Kin to enter the more mainstream portable space.

MS doesn't sound fond of committing to a new format until they're sure they can recover their investment at a faster rate. While they threw out quite a bit of cash on the first Xbox that wasn't the plan for them originally.

Nintendo has been aware of the benefits of multimedia for quite some time. They had a camera of the Gameboy Color afterall way back when :/ they just know that the consumers are willing to pay a premium to add these things on or they'll rebuy the hardware just to get the latest features (DS to DS Lite to DSi to DSi XL to DSi 3D) which is a shame.

There's no way anyone in their right mind will try to go optical for storage again. UMD was a failure beyond belief as movie studios dumped it and demanded compensation from Sony for the format bombing on them. The PSP GO also makes it troublesome to see optical formats coming to light again.

the dSi is only missing a phone, I bet they can do that for the generation after 3ds and improve everything else
