Guinness World Records 2010 Gamer's Ed. names top 50 franchises
Halo, Call of Duty, and Legend of Zelda take top 3
The Guinness World Records 2010 Gamer's Edition has spoken, and it's hard to argue with results chosen by gamers. That's right, the top 50 list compiled by Guinness is actually based on votes by gamers.
As editor Gaz Deaves (badass name) puts it:
"We decided to take a different approach with this list than we did in the previous edition. Instead of asking developers, industry insiders and journalists to rank their favorite titles, we approached a different kind of expert: the players themselves! We are confident that this 'top 50' more accurately reflects the tastes of the average gamer and not just the critics.
Over 13,000 votes were submitted, and the verdict is less than surprising. Note that all the titles refer to a franchise, taking into account every game in a series.
If the top image hasn't already given it away, first place on the list is Halo, which won out as the best selling FPS ever and, according to Gamer's Edition, boasts "an iconic character" and some of the best multiplayer options we've ever seen. The Call of Duty franchise comes in second, with bragging rights over the biggest entertainment launch in history and more multiplayer goodness. The Legend of Zelda games sit just below the FPS heavy-hitters, thanks to its accessibility and amazing design; Link is also probably the most recognizable elf on the planet.
The rest of the list includes games like Gears of War, Grand Theft Auto, Fallout, StarCraft, and Guitar Hero. Check it out, but don't rage.

I am shocked to see fallout beat half life though. And where the *bleep* is Doom? That is a travesty in itself.
This list is like voting for your schools student council president. Up top are the overrated overly popular games and then somewhere down the line are the games that actually deserve the title.
Half-Life being 14 is pretty good for a game that has never had a single television commercial.
As much as I like Gears of War, I wouldn't put it that high up. Halo, on the other hand, does deserve a high spot because it revolutionized multiplayer in console gaming.
