Samsung roadmap for upcoming netbook processors leaked
Quad core chip planned for 2013
A processor roadmap from Samsung turned up the other day on the ole Internet. The document lays out plans for Samsung to make waves in the netbook market over the next couple of years.
Instead of relying on Intel chips, Samsung will be making their own flavor of ARM-based, low-power processors.
The first one coming up is code-named Orion. It will be a 800MHz dual-core CPU based on the Cortex-A9 series. It will be coming next year.
Next, we have the Pegasus, which is a single-core processor clocked at 1GHz. After that, in about 2012, a dual-core version of the Pegasus, called Hercules, will be arrive.
Then dual-core 'Draco' will raise the bar to 1.2GHz, in later 2012.
And finally, at long last, a quad-core ARM-based processor called Aquila, running at 1.2GHz, is planned to hit netbooks around 2013.
The only question that remains is how netbooks and notebooks will continue to sell over the next few years. Especially with the introduction of the iPad, and the resulting tablet push from many other companies, there seems to a potential explosion in mobile device sales waiting to happen.
