XFX, always one company that is not afraid of a little overclocking, is coming up with a HD 5970 Black Edition video card. If it has a theme, it could be described as 'guns!'
The video card will be overclocked -- that is for sure -- and will feature double the GDDR5 of other HD 5970 video cards. With 4GB of memory, you will not running out anytime soon, and that extra memory makes this video card well suited to gaming with two or three displays.
This is not the first 4GB HD 5970 we have heard of. Asus is putting together an extreme HD 5970 with 4GB, and Sapphire is releasing a self-named HD 5990 video card, also with 4GB and pumped clocks. These limited-run cards were certainly all be the fastest things available today, but should sell for a big price premium, we imagine maybe around $800 or $900 US. They can also get away with charging arms and legs because in general, the standard HD 5970 itself is very difficult to get a hold of, and has been sold out at the big e-tailers for months.
Included with this XFX HD 5970, is a whole lot of dongles, which is great to see: you get three Mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort adapters, a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter, and two Mini DisplayPort to single-link DVI adapters.
We aren't too surprised to see XFX come up with something new right around this time. Because of switching sides and going with ATI video cards instead of NVIDIA, the company hasn't been able to jump aboard the Fermi / GTX 480 launch like a small selection of other companies.
