In a press release today for investors, Nintendo has announced that they will be releasing a brand new handheld: the Nintendo 3DS. This system, according to Nintendo, will succeed the best-selling Nintendo DS, which the publisher has confirmed has sold approximately 125 million units as of the end of 2009. Nintendo plans to release the portable system within their next fiscal year, which beings next month and ends in March 2011.
The defining feature of the Nintendo 3DS will be that the system will support 3D effects without the use of any special glasses. For gamers already heavily invested in the Nintendo DS, don't fret as the DS in 3DS isn't just for show: the Nintendo 3DS will be backwards-compatible with Nintendo DS and DSi software titles.
Nintendo will be formally unveiling the Nintendo 3DS at this year's E3 Expo on June 15th in Los Angeles, California. The hardware maker's other upcoming handheld, the Nintendo DSi XL, will be hitting North America this Sunday on March 28th.
