Dungeons & Dragons Online: Stormreach last year (mostly) abandoned monthly subscription fees in favor of a free-to-play model supported by microtransactions through the MMORPG's Eberron Unlimited update. MMO operator Turbine this week confirms that going F2P paid off handsomely for DDO, even in the literal sense.
In addition to scoring over a million new players, the number of subscribers willing to pay for premium in-game content through the DDO Store more than doubled. Turbine claims transactions through the DDO Store are "three times the industry average", leading to a 500 percent increase in revenue from the title since the Eberron Unlimited update first launched last September.
A monthly subscription option remains available for players who would prefer "unlimited" access to all of game's content without needing to visit the DDO Store.
