Longtime series developer Firaxis returns to the fray
Civ fans: prepare to get your feathers aruffle, as a new entry in the series has just been announced. Civilization V comes to us from longtime developer Firaxis Games, and tentatively at least, is PC exclusive.
V is poised as a revamp; the game will feature a new engine built from the ground up, bringing with it "an entirely new combat system, deeper diplomatic interactions and a cavalcade of expanded features."
Specifically, and as you can see from the screenshots below, hexagon tiles will be introduced, a la Elven Legacy and other such titles. There's also animated leaders which speak in their native language (very nice touch), and "ranged bombardment" (there's a lovely juxtaposition of words).
Staying loyal to the fans, 2K and Firaxis will also be supporting an "extensive suite" of community, modding and multiplayer elements.
The game is currently set for an autumn release.

I hope 5 changes it up a bit to bring in the ADD gamer.
The Civ series has been some of the PC strategy games ever made. It would be absolutely terrible if they tried to make it more action orientated, or changed the formula up extensively. They won't change it though -- Fraxis knows not to mess with a good thing.
Sean -=> Civilization is certainly not an RTS. It's a turn-based strategy game (TBS)
Alci -=> What? I don't think so. Civ IV is excellent. I think most people would say it is the best in the series, especially with the expansion packs, and the hundreds of amazing mods available. Have you played Civ 3 or Civ 4?
Jakson -=> Hey cool --finally someone who actually knows something about this amazing series of games.
Just because a game is turned based doesn't make it bad. I dunno why some folks seem to feel that way. It's odd. Like I can appreciate a game of tennis, or Modern Warfare 2, and those games would not work out so well if they were turn based. But I can also really get into a very deep, strategically rich and interesting strategy game, like a Civ game, and these games are work best with turn based gameplay. Casualizing or consolizing them (like Civ Revolutions) would really wreck them.
The head designer for this game was a Civ 4 modder who was snatched up Firaxis out of college. He was head designer on Beyond the Sword. I have a lot faith he knows just what he is doing and is going to bring a lot to the game.
This, APB, and Alpha Protocol are probably my top games now I'm looking forward to in 2010. Oh and Deus Ex 3 -- though I don't think it'll come out in 2010 as planned.
