It looks so stupid. The action is silly.

No offense to the developers but it looks like a game that would have been made about 10 years ago.

It's supposed to look that way.
Keep in mind games like Mega Man 9.

This newsbit contains a lot of factual errors, and some of the comments above are consequently probably based on the wrong idea about this game. As one of the impressed fanbase allow me to clear up a few things:
- It is not an Action RPG, has no similarity whatsoever to torchlight (have you really tried out the demo? I can't imagine based on that comparison). It's a retro/classic turn based RPG following where the original Fallouts and Arcanum left off.
- It is made by a team of 4 in their spare time, on a shoestring budget, and its been in development for a while. Don't expect graphic miracles, but you may expect style, deep quest design, high replayability, a highly tactical combat system (for a SP game). Still, it looks better than other indie RPG's at least (Spiderwebs, Eschalon, Knights of the Chalice, to name a few)
- It is not set "in roman times". AoD takes place in a unique post-apocalyptic fantasy world INSPIRED by the fall of the roman empire.
- Head to the ITS forums if you are interested to learn more

I can't believe they actually called this an Action RPG. Considering how many Action RPGs these days get the label pure RPG (Oblivion, etc) this is sooo ironic.

Do journalists even bother doing any research before posting nonsense like this? He actually compared an old school Fallout inspired RPG (one where you can finish the entire game without combat) to a Diablo-clone click fest like Torchlight?

I should take up journalism, I could do better than these hacks. It's not like you even have to do any real work these days, a couple of good google searches and somebody else does your research for you. Sean Ridgeley, are you THAT lazy that you can't even google or wikipedia?

I apologize if I came off as particularly harsh, but I am rather frustrated by the gaming news industry in general, which seems to have the lowest standards in accuracy these days.

I'm just a little confused. You list Fallout as one of your favorite games and said you played the demo and appear to have read something about it, how did you manage to come to the conclusion that it was "fundamentally similar" to Torchlight when to two games are on far different ends of the RPG spectrum?

Age of Decadence is more akin to a less-combat focused version of Fallout (yet with a more interesting combat system in my opinion), whereas Torchlight is a flawed (but cheap!) version of Diablo 2, with graphics inspired by the unreleased Diablo 3.

Also, here is a more updated video from the demo itself: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VwNVXj3T770

Sweet the demo is out I've been looking forward to this game for awhile now. Graphics to me are far less important than depth, and Age of Decadence is a game that seems to have tons of that. I stumbled upon this game after checking out the DoubleBear forums... I'm going to have to give this go as soon as I get a chance...

See, that's how you get an actual response haha.

I hold very high standards for myself and the other staff. I'm also frustrated by gaming journalism today. I think here this is simply a point of semantics and misinterpretation.

The emphasis is on the word "fundamentally." Yes, they're very different in a lot of ways, but they're similar in some, too. Both have stats, weapons, combat, fantasy-based story, etc etc. I think they're similar enough that most anybody who likes AoD might prefer to spend their money on Torchlight instead, hence the mention (similarly, you can buy the Fallouts for $6 each now). Perhaps I could've been more distinct, but I've never been particular about genre.

Torchlight is a Diablo clone, but it's kinda supposed to be. And it's hard to criticize it too much given some key people from the original Diablo worked on it.

A turn-based play, non-class system, branching storyline where you solve quests in a variety of ways is fundamentally similar to an action, class-based, linear storyline, collect loot randomly-generated dungeon crawler?

Both have stats = given, they are both RPG derivatives, albeit very, very different. Maybe you should recommend Doom 3 over Diablo 2, it also has weapons + combat and a fantasy story about demons. They are fundamentally the same!

And I wasn't knocking Torchlight for being a Diablo clone anymore than I was knocking Age of Decadence for being a Fallout clone. I like both games for very different reasons, hence the reason they shouldn't be compared when trying to give your audience a base idea of what kind of game you are reviewing.

Thanks for the feedback guys, but if you're going to talk about accuracy and semantics, can you at least stop labeling a 3 paragraph exposure quip as a review? I think that's a farther stretch than comparing AoD to Torchlight :/

As a side note, perhaps some of these passionate fans could submit a more thorough "preview"/pre-review to our user reviews section of Age of Decadence.
