Producer praises Demon's Souls, Mass Effect 2 won't be a "cakewalk"
Although the PR team seems to think gamers are "scared of RPGs", Mass Effect 2 producer Adrien Cho feels sometimes "we're pampering gamers too much", and as such, they want us to be genuinely challenged by the upcoming title.
It has been previously stated the "Insanity" difficulty would offer a big challenge for those after that sort of thing, but may or may not be unlocked from the start. Seems like BioWare may have taken that fan feedback to heart when including Nightmare difficulty from the beginning in Dragon Age, so it's a distinct possibility for Mass Effect 2.
Cho goes on to praise the beloved (and very hard) Demon's Souls:
“[It's] fantastic because when you die, and you fail, it’s not because the game was cheap it’s usually because you didn’t do something properly."
“It goes back to that learning mechanism of “Well, I tried this – it didn’t work. I’m going to try something different.” And I think that’s going to be something in Mass Effect 2, we don’t want it to be a cakewalk, you want a challenge."
It's fantastic to hear From Software's RPG is already having an effect on the gaming industry; the title has certainly proved there's still a big audience for challenging games, as well as for those who do want a cakewalk (it's alright, we can still be friends).
ME2's publicist Heather Rabatich had previously stated, "Your Halo gamer would love this game, because again, it's a more sophisticated gaming audience now." It appears Cho agrees on the latter part, but much better understands the rest of it:
“I think gamers want a more sophisticated game; they don’t want a breezy game where you see all the cinematics and just put in your hours and play it through. So definitely there’s some serious consequences. Delicious consequences! You’ll have to play to find out.”
We look forward to it, Cho, and thank you in advance for kicking our ass some.
