I'm quite curious as to how GamersGate and Impulse are any less restrictive than Steam?

And maybe it's just me, but I've seen more PC gamers actually building their own systems, or buying them from smaller vendors like Cyberpower or iBuyPower, rather than buy them from Alienware. I mean, how many sales do they actually get?

GamersGate doesn't require a client, and the online authentication is circumventable. Impulse requires the client for download and updates only. And many games on Impulse use Goo for protection which brings a lot of openness to the DRM thing. With Steam your games are absolutely tied to Steam, online authentication, etc. Some don't mind, some do...

As for Alienware, yeah, it's not huge, but I'd bet this is the start of a longer plan. Best to try and stop it before it gets big.

I like Steam and think it is a good service, but ya, I also worry that it might become overly dominate one day. If it becomes THE source for most downloadable games, then we can probably expect prices to rise for games, and stricter DRM... competition is important.

I enjoy Steam. With broadband and DSL connections, there is no excuse for not having an Internet connection. And yes, unexpected ISP downtimes will cause problems, but in tomorrow's world, an Internet crash will equate to as much of an impairment on your ability to use products as a power outage. The Internet itself is becoming a second form of electricity, if you will. This is just natural. We all know the solitare and mspaint ISP downtimes are hell, just wait until your toaster gives you weather information, and your thermostat automates itself based on recent climate information.
