Critically acclaimed indie game tries again after rough development

Cave Story Wii has had a rough development run.  The run-and-gun platformer about an amnesiac android's adventures on a floating island -- also inhabited by rabbit-y creatures, a cruel doctor, and the best flying toaster ever made -- was intended to be available at the end of 2008 but met with a huge delay that persisted for months with a smattering of updates here and there to keep fans posted.  Up until now, there had been no suggested release period.

Developer and publisher Nicalis posted a much anticipated update on their blog today.  Looks like Cave Story for WiiWare has recently been resubmitted to Nintendo for approval.  Nicalis will continue keeping fans up to date on the issue, with hopes that the verdict will come later this week.

It was recently revealed that the WiiWare version will feature a palette-swap of the game's android protagonist, Quote.  The Nicalis blog and the official Cave Story Twitter account also showcase the new Quote sprite, changing his usual red/green get-up to an odd yellow/blue outfit, as seen on the right.  Oddly enough, the sprite appearing upside-down on the blog, which may be hinting at a whole new mystery.  Entries from the game's Twitter feed point out that this new Quote has a purpose and was specially designed by the game's designer, Daisuke Amaya.

As before, Cave Story for WiiWare will feature Classic Controller support, a revised English localization, and updated soundtrack and visuals, plus an the option to play the game in its original 8-bit style -- chiptunes and all.  There are no details about extra content for this version, nor has a price point been set, though it was reported earlier to be between 500 and 1000 Nintendo Points, which isn't much of a bargain compared the PC version's pricepoint of nothing.

You're free to try the game right now on several platforms or wait for what will be the de-facto version to hit WiiWare.  Either way, you're in for one of the best indie games ever made.

Oh man, I had no idea Cave Story had to go through the motions on WiiWare. I'm still looking forward to this one actually! Maybe I should try out the PC version in the meantime and dare to compare if the WiiWare release makes it.
