Apparently the PC version has no problems

Patch rolls out for console versions of Borderlands Image 1

Gearbox Software has put out the first patch for their new titles, Borderlands. You can find the change log below.

The patch is only for the Xbox and PS3 versions of the game though -- in the community forums, a spokesperson stated that they are "continuing [to] work on support updates for all platforms, and will deploy fixes for every version as soon as possible."

Unfortunately for PC gamers, Gearbox certainly seems to have prioritized the console version of this ARPG. The PC version was not very tailored to the PC -- the version seems like an afterthought:  the menus and GUI were not altered in the PC version at all,  and are much better suited to console gamers. Furthermore, the PC version has poor voice chat implementation, weak matchmaking services, and it's super-easy to cheat by altering save files -- all stuff that is also somewhat some what disappointing for a PC game. Not that we can blame Gearbox too much though for focusing on the Xbox 360 and PS3; after all, the console version of the game will undoubtedly sell far more copies than the oft-pirated PC version. And as far as bugs go, while the PC version has some bugs here and there, for the the most part, as PC games go, the game is arguably in pretty good shape.

If you somehow missed hearing about it this week, Borderlands is a stylish MP-friendly FPS-ARPG hybrid, set in a post-apocalyptic world, and featuring a randomized Diablo-style loot system. The game seemed to have come in below many gamers' radar, and is currently enjoying a good buzz, and (we presume) great sales.

Here is the stuff fixed by the first patch:

    Xbox 360 Fixes
    • Fixed a bug which caused players and other things in the world to appear incorrectly on clients in networked games
    • fixed a bug in which players gibbed in arena combat disappeared
    • fixed a bug which caused the dollars counter to spin continuously
    • fixed a bug that caused the digger elevator to be unusable after completing the Find Tannis mission
    • Weapon mapping to the D-pad should no longer reverse left and right
    • various localization and other text and tooltip corrections
    • The introductory quests with CL4P-TP should now always progress properly all the time
    • Lilith's Phase Strike ability now works as intended
    • Load times have been improved

    PlayStation 3 Fixes
    • Load times have been improved
    • Lilith's Phase Strike ability now works as intended
    • The introductory quests with CL4P-TP should now always progress properly
    • fixed a bug that caused the digger elevator to be unusable after completing the Find Tannis mission
    • Weapon mapping to the D-pad should no longer reverse left and right
    • fixed a crash when ejecting the disc during the autosave warning splash screen
    • Players in a lobby should no longer experience long loading when starting a game after one player leaves
    • A bug which caused players and other things in the world to appear incorrectly on clients in networked games has been fixed
    • fixed a bug in which players gibbed in arena combat disappeared
    • Changed how space required for saves is calculated
    • fixed a bug which caused the dollars counter to spin continuously
    • various localization and other text and tooltip corrections

I still don't think that Phase Strike works unless your only allowed to hit once during Phasewalk before it ends.

What you mean gearbox lied about the game being a port from PC to consoles..... And these companies wonder why people dont buy the games. I did buy the PC version and while the concept is fun, it does feel neglected. PC needs a patch desperately. Maybe some of the "optimization and polishing" that caused a week long delay and doesn't seem to have been added.

What's wrong with the PC version? I have it, and it's great.

I THOUGHT I'd found a memory leak/lag problem, but it turned out to just be AVG running a goddam virus scan in the background.

I must admit the menus are a little screwed up (pressing Escape to cancel dropping an item, for example. It tells you to do this, but it doesn't do anything. You actually have to click on cancel instead)

But the reason there are Xbox button commands in the menus is because the PC version is still compatible with the Xbox 360 controller. Not that I'd EVER want to use a controller in an FPS given the choice, but some people do, I guess.

Could be that the multiplayer isn't completely perfect, but I'm only using single player for now.

There is a lot of wrong things with the PC version. I only played until level 20 but: I already have 3 blocked missions (some objects are missing so you cannot finish them), and I've been stucked in some places of the senario and so I was forced to exit the game. If you consider multiplayer, then it's a real crap: you cannot mute your mic without manually editing some config file, you have to configure your router in order to host a game, and I have experienced a lot of disconnections. By the way, I have a legit copy and my internet conenction is good enough for all other games I play (but I would not feel robed right now if I was a pirate). The game is obviouslly unfinished and has not gone through standard testing.
