Yahoo pulls the plug, users in denial

Long before MySpace and its godawful layouts were popularized, there was Geocities, a web host started up in 1994 that provided anyone with a computer and an IQ of 5 or more with the ability to create their own site. Used Angelfire myself, where I first learned how to link a page ("it's <a herf=>", right?), but it's the same story.

Before its purchase by Yahoo, Geocities was the #3 site on the web, so for some it's sad news to learn the company has just yesterday shut down the service, integrating it with Yahoo Web Hosting.

However. A group of fans going by the name of Archive Team heard the news months in advance and have spent much of their time since then downloading pages for the purposes of preservation. If you just can't let go, head to geociti.es once the project sees completion.

That "GEOCITIES IS DEAD" would look great on a t-shirt I think.

Or you can head over to http://www.reocities.com/ and pretend nothing happened
Enjoy! All it takes is a one letter change.

I am just finding out tonight that this happened and I'm devastated. There was information on my geocities site that I simply can't ever get back unless by chance one of the archive sites managed to get it. I laid in my hospital bed and updated my geocities site as the night went on so that my friends and family could see a "play by play" of my progress having my last baby. My son's birth story appears to be gone forever. It never crossed my mind that geocities would just up and disappear. I've been using it since before 1999.
