CEO hints at new add-on, PR sticking with "no comment"
Chances are if you love Blu-ray movies, you already have a PlayStation 3 or separate player. Now it seems Microsoft might be joining the club.
In a recent interview, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer was asked whether the Xbox 360 would ever get Blu-ray functionality. His response? A confirmation that Microsoft's console will eventually be Blu-ray-friendly, though he's probably referring to an external drive only. Ballmer states:
"Well I don't know if we need to put Blu-ray in there -- you'll be able to get Blu-ray drives as accessories."
And that was pretty much it. No date, no details. Already rumors are flying, and Xbox 360 owners are either pleased or terribly upset at the prospect of another overpriced add-on. But hey, maybe it can read your pulse too.
Microsoft PR was quick to do damage control, but the reps are only adding to the rumor-pile with their "no comment" statement:
Our immediate solution for Blu-ray-quality video on an Xbox 360 is coming this fall with Zune Video and 1080p instant-on HD streaming. As far as our future plans are concerned, we're not ready to comment.
Well, it's not a "yes" but not am outright "no" either. So for now, this Xbox 360 Blu-ray business is only speculation; at least Natal is already a sure thing.
