While it's troubling to have a thing like "review inflation" be an issue in the market, it is not a secret practice among developers and gamer review boards. It's a process folks, called Marketing!! Hype a game up, give a good review on your site, reep the rewards of revenue from developers who want you to review their games and consumers wh'll buy your mag to know more about the game. It's a system of companies cratching each others backs folks.. not rocket science..it's buisness. A fine example of such false hype is from Microsoft and Lionhead with their ever popular over hyped game Fable and Fable 2. The reviews changed from Peter Molnahuex being the virtual Rpg messiah to being it's venomous Anti-christ of false promises directly after the christmas season. In conclusion, Edios (if guilty) hasn't done what everyone else hasn't already done a million times before. The simple solution to this kind of marketing is to stop listening or reading reviews and experence the games yourselves by renting, demoing, or buying the game on your own. I personally think Batman Arkham Asylum is well deserving of its hype, you may feel differently. Think for yourselves people.

quote Dr Killfrenzy
This kind of behavior by Eidos only gives software pirates a good reason to crack the game, so they can tell the world they did it so people can honestly make up their mind about a certain game before buying it...
I don't see how they're related. Anyway that's what demos are for.

The launch trailer has already shown one GOTY award, which I don't understand...

Well , in the end, it looks like Batman is a big winner regardless. Judging by all the reviews now, it's looking like a Game of the Year possibility .

@Chris: how can you know if the game is gonna be great before buying/renting/borrowing the game if you cannot trust the reviews?

don't count on it MrGrimm...Eidos did this sort of thing before (the Eidos-Gamespot soap opera) and they still sell a lot of games. Bad reputation for coercing reviewers? there are just too little people like you reading news on sites like neoseeker...the majority of the potential buyers do not read such news, but only see a nifty looking games mag with batman on the cover and then quickly get to the page where they can see the review score.

Whatever gain they may get from coercing reviewers is probably going to be counteracted by the bad reputation they gain from doing so.

A more appropriate question given that argument would be: why review games at all? But so long as we do, it's important to discuss these matters.

To be honest I don't really pay much attention to reviews of games, as everyone has their own taste and expectations of games. The best way to judge if you like a game is to play demos, rent the game when it comes out even, then buy it if you like it. Then it makes the whole argument of whether a review is honest or "bought" by a comapny pointless. At the end of the day games are there to enjoy, so why waste time and energy on this subject?

The whole point of review is giving honest feedback on something, to let your readers know whether or not it is worth buying. I'm kind of alarmed that you think it's fine that companies have more influence on a review score than the game itself. If you think that this is the case, then why do you even read reviews at all?

Who cares? Well I do. I would rather have reviews based on reviewers' opinions, instead of his questionable relationship to the company involved.

at the end of the day, who cares? the game is great, and it will be a GOTY candidate.

I played ther demo on the PS3 over the weekend, downloaded from playstation store, and all I can say is going on the demo they should of given it 98/100 it really is that impressive, if you like your batman they way it should be and as DC comics reated it, and not like the movies then you are in for a real treat!!. If you have not pre-ordered it to secure a copy alot of people will be disapointed come release day in 2 weeks time!!!
