New cyberpunk Source mod 'NeoTokyo' touches down

Ghost In The Shell influenced, round-based and free

A new mod was released this week, the result of years of hard work from a devoted mod team. It is called NeoTokyo, and in the roughest terms, it is sort of like a cyberpunk-themed Counter-Strike.

Have you seen Ghost in the Shell? Remember that one? Cyberpunk classic? Had that naked invisible Japanese android girl, that tough cyborg dude with the mechanical eye, and the Yakuza? NeoTokyo takes some inspiration from that film classic, and dashes it with some tactical FPS combat.

The game plays out in rounds. It is a variety of capture-the-flag -- but you're not capturing a flag, you are capturing a 'ghost', a robot carcass. This game is far more Rainbow Six (the earlier ones, not the new action-based ones) than it is spam-fest or run-and-gun, like Team Fortress. Some patience is required.

There are three classes you can be: Support (basically a walking heavy weapons platform), Recon (fast moving, scout-type, with timed invisibility cloaks and boost-jumps) and Assault (the medium choice, assault rifles and frag grenades). There are two teams playing each game round, 5 to 9 players a side.

Unlike the other fantastic cyberpunk Source mod, Dystopia, NeoTokyo has no hacking or cyberspace element. Instead, team communication is important as you attempt to neutralize your opponent.

As you may have guessed from the name, the game takes place in Tokyo, about 20 or 30 years from now. But things aren't too sci-fi. The weapons are fairly realistic.

The game's music is pretty sweet, the graphics are solid, and the game takes skill to play. If you want to check it out, you can get it here. All you need to play it is Steam and any game with the Source SDK, like Half Life 2, or Zeno Clash, or any of the other many others.

Good mods need good player support! Support indie-developers by trying out their stuff.

I downloaded Dystopia before, played through the tutorial, and never really got beyond that. This one, however, looks much more intriguing. I might give it shot sometime.

There are tactics involved in Team Fortress, if you know how to play properly.

There might be some tactics. But I definitely would not say it is tactical game . The one exception being elite clan matches and stuff. But I would argue most of the game is far more run-and-gun.

You don't respawn in Team Fortress 2 thinking 'what will my strategy be for this round?' Your primary impulse is more to run out of spawn and find the nearest person to shoot. IMHO anyways.

Thanks for deleting my comment, there is still *NO* invisibility in this game.

Oh really? That's odd. I thought there was something like.. THERMO CAMO that like ... sort of made you... something similar to INVISIBLE or something.

Hey has anyone seen any INVISIBILITY in here?

    I don't see any...

But maybe because it is INVISIBLE or something?

I think it's a bit Japanese oriented in terms of characters' styles and animations, nonetheless the overall game play and scenario should be more enjoyable if it's featured a mission of sneaking and penetrating around Tokyo's famous Red Light District, just to prevent some gratuitous dilemmas, Hee Hee.....

kspiess, if you have played even 5 minutes of Neotokyo you would know that there is no true invisibility in the game. The thermoptics camo allows the user to become partially transparent - but never fully invisible...
