Clan CEO pulls a Madoff and robs everyone

The space-ship themed MMORPG EVE Online has been at the forefront of virtual economies, with a thriving gaming world containing billions of virtual credits, overseen by a real-life actual economist. Like any good MMORPG, all those virtual credits add up to a couple of real-world dollars -- a fact that proved tempting for one player of the game.

RicDic -- a name that will live on in infamy -- decided that while he was rich in EVE, he wasn't all that well off IRL So, he decided to pull a good ole fashioned robbery. Being a CEO of an in-game corporation (the equivalent of a guild in a fantasy game), he had access to all the funds collected by his gaming-group. With one massive withdraw, he purged the company accounts, ending up taking somewhere around 200 billion space-credits. Sold to other players in the real world, this worked out to about $5,000 USD.

"I'm not proud of it at all, that's why I didn't brag about it," the terrible person was quoted as saying. "But you know, if I had to do it again, I probably would've chosen the same path based on the same situation," said the thief, as quoted by the Reuters news agency.

This big huge robbery caused a run on the in-game banks, and caused all sorts of anger explosions to break out in the game's forums.

"Anyone who 'understands' RicDic's actions and sees them as justifiable should be treated as a future scammer and should not be trusted with anything worth more than a Mexican peso. RicDic mismanaged his finances and found himself in a situation not uncommon to many people in these current times," said Lecherito, one of many upset EVE players.

"He should have stepped down and sold his computer, sold his car, moved to a house/apartment actually affordable on what must be an absolutely dismal salary, get a second job, etc etc etc etc. When **** hit the fan he made the decision of a weaker man. Stabbing friends in the back for his own benefit."

haha, hilarity. In-game currency is fair game as there are no laws against robbing fake money. They want the economy to be realistic, well, this type of shit happens in real life, sucks to be those who got ripped off though.
hmmmmm sell my car, sell my computer, or steal fake money and sell it to people... tough choice.
Stabbing friends in the back? It's an online GAME, go make friends in real life.
You people and the whiny second life players should all be pelted with stones.

Hey it might just be a game but they still spent months of effort to gather that much money. To steal all of your friend's work like that for your own gain is stabbing them in the back, no matter how you look at it.

And that, my friends, is yet another reason why you shouldn't play MMORPGs.

ALL YOUR BASE ARE BELONG TO US.

I mean, couldn't he somehow be in a lot of legal trouble with this?

He used it to pay off his sons medical bills.

You whiny kids need to get off the internet and go do something real for a change.

That's no excuse, Kevin Spiess -- if that is your real name.

It doesn't matter if you steal $5000 to buy yourself a golden top hat or a ticket to save the universe, a court will still find you just as guilty. It isn't the other EVE players fault that medical care in the United States is prohibitively expensive and the cause for the majority of personal bankruptcies there.

Haha Pilliy! Ya good point. The space-guild should totally receive a government bailout.

Now that I think about it, I'd do the exact same thing. The money was fair game really, and if I could get my hands on $5,000 with no penalties I sure as hell would.

If he really was in financial trouble, why didn't he just ask his company to help? If someone from my gaming clans asked if I would help them, I probably would.

You'd give 5 grand to someone you play a game with?

I'm pretty sure he didn't mean he'd give him $5000 himself, but hey, if there are enough members contributing $5 or so on average, he could maybe have made even more than he did with the liquidation of virtual assets...

Think about it this way. If they give up on the game in anger, that guy has saved lots of people from wasting their lives on EVE. EVE is evil. It takes YEARS to train your character to use a really big ship, if I've been informed correctly. Not to mention earning enough cash to buy it. And then when it gets blown up... yeaaaah.

Why do people think he stole $5000? If anyone is to be at fault here, it should be the people who gave him the $5000 for the monopoly money. It's not like he was the only one in on it and did it all by himself. There was who-knows-how-many other people helping him do it.

Okay, the laughter has now subsided - It shouldn't be all that difficult for those who run that sorry surrogate for a real life to determine who is trying to spend the funny money that they bought from Teh Dic.
What they do with them is their call.

With most games, the sale of in-game items or currency for real life currency is against the rules and user agreements. guesss this is therefore breach of contract, though I'm guessing this is only a civil rather than criminal offence

Prosecuting this crime would be incredibly difficult. Not just because of the laws involved, but also because everyone involved is so spread out.

I would really hate to be the 60 year-old judge in the case, if it did go to trail, trying to figure out the heck happened and how the hell anyone stole 'space credits' etc, hehe. Dude would have a hard time figuring it out, I'd imagine. Hell even the lawyers would.
