Analyst: Xbox 360 will fall to PlayStation 3 in 2015

Maybe NATAL will be finalized by then, too!

Okay, so no one actually said anything about Project Natal, but Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter still likes making video game industry predictions.  No matter how wonky they are or which console they favor.

This time, he's declaring the PlayStation 3 a victor -- in 2015.  As a result, Pachter claims that the Xbox 360 will fall into third place worldwide by then, with the PlayStation 3 in second thanks to its Blu-ray compatibility and the Xbox 360's poor sales history in Japan.

Here's the notable excerpt from Pachter's 200+ page report:

"We think that the PS3 will capture significant market share, primarily due to Sony’s victory in the high definition DVD format war, and will end up in second place by 2015.

"Although Microsoft’s Xbox 360 enjoyed a first mover advantage, we think that its market position will fade to third place due to lack of penetration in Japan."

This man can see the future, someone call the B.P.R.D.!

Wait, so who will be first place in 2015, if not the PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360?  The Nintendo Wii HD, of course!  I'm not making this up; the report also speculates / insists the arrival of an HD Wii console, which Pachter believes will debut next year.

I mean, once all the xbox's RRoD there will be no competition.

Over 200 pages? 2015? Wii HD? Someone find this guy a real job.

Here: PS3 introduces backwards compatibility in slim model in 2010, PS4 arrives 2014, Microsoft and Nintendo make joint-console in 2013.

    Where's my cheque?

I don't think a PS4 will come out that soon, and I don't think that Microsoft and Nintendo, being large companies who want money, will make a joint console.

Pretty sure he was mocking the guy with sarcasm lol. A wiiHD isnt all THAT far fetched tbh, perhaps not in the next year but in the next 5 i can see something like that coming out. As for the ps3 taking over in 2015, thats not all that far off of a prediction either. In fact that is sonys game plan. As of right now theyve sold like 70% the amount of consoles the 360 has, but due to the fact that its hardware is more advanced, and the bluray format is there, games for it will continue to look better and better, and get bigger and bigger. Meanwhile the 360 is stuck using dvds which are like 1/5th the capacity and the graphics system is already beginning to plateau.

^That is an interesting point, actually. Though 360 has Natal going for it.

    Though I consider myself a ps3 fanboy : )
I would hope that this is not true I have been gaming for a large part of my life everything from arcades to handhelds computers and home consoles and 1 thing I have found that competition is the best friend we gamers have

Thx to company’s competing to get our hard earn money they try to make the best games or consoles possible to one up each other if 1 company were to dominate completely they could charge whatever they wanted for games and the console and sadly we would have to either buy it or not play anything at all

So here’s hoping big bill pulls a fast one whit natal and then Sony fiends something to counteract it and we keep seeing newer better tech that actually works

Well, the PS3 could be a victor in 2015 simply for the fact MS will probably stop supporting the 360 by then. See, there aren't any original X-box games being made (so far as I know) anymore. But the PS2 is still going strong....

If MS does the same thing as last generation, then yeah....

I highly doubt that because the Xbox sold poorly in one country, the console that sold poorly in most countries will pass it. That, and in 2015 I doubt the average citizen will have any more cash than they do right now, and the reason the PS3 is selling poorly in comparison is because of the ridiculous price tag. :/

This guy should look for a new job.

Unless the PS3 drops in price, I reckon it'll stay the same as it is right now for the same exact reason: nobody can afford it.

Japan is one of the most important countries to electronics manufacturers. If products are selling well there then chances are itll carry over to the rest of the world within a few years. Sure its "one country" but outside north america its probably thr biggest market.

The ps3 is so much more expensive because you get more for your money.
For example, the ps3 is pretty close to being a computer so it has a lot of the capabilities of one, the Xbox pretty much just plays games, the ps3 has a blu ray disc player, and the ps3 has actually dropped in price drastically but still keeps its performance.

The Xbox may be cheaper, but has quite a bit less than the ps3 and has a history of overheating.

So overall, i wouldn't be surprised if the ps3 outsold the Xbox.
And one more thing, people can obviosly afford it, because the ps3 has a lot of sales.

Get your facts right before you post on something like this.

But to tell you the truth i honestly couldn't care less which one wins because in my eyes they both have there goods and bads.

Well, it's highly likely that PS4 will be debuted by 2015 after considering the fact that PS3 was launched in 2006 in Japan and across the world in 2007 when global PS2 sales were still going strong.

In terms of overall future HD coverage, PS3 is a first choice for some consumers mainly because of Blu-ray capability, popular hardware reliability and other good features such as Wi-fi.

Nevertheless, in my opinion, by the end of 2015, every console will have a sizeable fan base regardless of their total sales numbers. Every console will be equally enjoyable all the same at the end of their lifetime.

More importantly, the probability of PS3 becoming a next generation king is somewhat deterred by its diversity of games although some excellent PS3 games are coming constantly to entice both hardcore PS3 fans and casual gamers alike.

Most importantly, the probability of a consortium between Microsoft and Nintendo is still possible if they willingly abandon their "Individualism motto" in the so-called capitalist world of console competition. There is also a high probability that Sony and Nintendo will again somehow try to cooperate in the future just for the sake of probono publico.

All in all, what will transpire exactly is still merely a matter of mundane debate in gaming communities across the world.

    OMG... Rolls-eyes...

Blue-ray drives are failing. Blue-ray disks are decaying in the air and under the blue-laser. (Seems plastic does not like blue/UV light.)

X-Box has poor sales in japan, because they have not created a market in japan. It is difficult to have a game-platform in japan because there are dozens of others out there. Sony rules japan, and that is all they rule.

X-box has better games, better programming support, better customer support, more users, more sales, programmers love it, and that is all it takes to be number one.

No, Wii is not number one. They have 10 units in every store, for every one x-box in the store. They paid stores to stock units. Game-sales for Wii and online users are few and far between. Users have not purchased 111 million Wii's, stores have 11 million Wii's in stock, and some have sold.

Wii is the least played console, followed by PS3, and X-Box 360 is the most played console. Half the users have all three, or two consoles. The ones who have X-Box 360 and another console, majority prefer X-Box 360, and have more games for it. The average number of games of an X-Box 360 user is around 15 games. The average number of games for a PS3 user is about 7. The average number of games for a Wii user is about 3.

    Now you do the math.

Sony is a "Never will be". X-Box 360 is a "Destine to be". Wii is a "WTF is this supposed to be?"

Yes, Sony has better numbers and more potential, but it is just a big rock without motion. No game uses all of the PS3 goodies, and games are difficult to program and thus, severely glitched.

If you like paying twice as much for quality you will never notice in a movie or a game, buy a PS3. But remember, you can just buy a blue-ray player for the x-box 360, and ultimately have a console that works better, has more titles, has better titles, has more content, and has more people to play with and who can sell you or lend you their games. (You will hae a hard time finding someone who will let you borrow their $70.00 blue-ray game or movie. You can find many who are willing to let you borrow their $35.00 X-Box game after they finish, or join you when you get your own.)

    Wrong...

PS3 is on a 10-year plan... they have nothing in development.

X-Box is also on a 10-year plan... However, each new model of x-box 360 has new hardware inside. There is even rumor of a dual-screen version of 360 under development. (Three screens would be cool, but two screens also introduces full 3D, with the use of glasses and expands two-player into a more palatable option. All using the same upgraded hardware in the 360.)

    OMG... Rolls-eyes...

    a 360 fanboy.

either that or site your sources, because more then half of what you posted is utter bull lol.

The Wii is the most sold console, that is why they are everywhere, supply and demand, or didnt you take economics.

the 360 only has some good exclusives because M$ is paying off everyone and their aunt to steal games away from other systems. The 360 isnt doing jack over in japan because the 360 is associated with fps games predominately and japan was an rpging culture in the beginning.

Also what is that tripe about blu-ray's getting turned to dust by the air? lol who the ruddy hell will believe that, it's so *bleep*. I own 12 blu-ray movies and have had then for years and they are in perfect condition minus a few scratches on the bottom surfaces, much like any dvd.

Dvd's can hold at most 16 GB if they are dual-layered. Blue rays hold 25 GB to a max of 50 GB.

Star Ocean 4 is the perfect example of a game designed for Blu-ray and the ps3 that M$ payed friggin large amounts of money to steal away. It takes 3 dvd's to fit the whole game and the developers did not make very wise decisions when decided how best to break up the content. Each time you go to a world you must load-in the dvd it is on, and you have to go to each of them many times through out the game. One Blu-ray disc would most likely have fit the whole game and cost the devs a little less to produce over time.

Anyway, to the guy that said stuff bout competition. There hasnt been any fair competition since M$ entered into the gaming world, it has gotten much worse since M$ started trying to off Sony.

M$ made a console and brought a tank to a gun-fight (the tank being their billions) and are using the cannon to try and blast away what they consider to be annoying pests (nintendo/sony)

Just to comment on the article, i hope it is true. Maybe M$ will then see that making a console faster, with more issues that cause the console to literally melt, and throwing obscene amounts of money at game makers to exclusivity the games for a system doesn't work in a free-market economy (being the US) or in countries where they are slightly detested.

    @JasonD
also to your second comment, no console system created or that will be created in the next 12 years to 30 years will have full immersion virtual reality like your describing, the glasses will most likely be like the ones you get out of comic books that give you the fake pop out at you look.

2015? Really? Wow. That's *bleep* as hell. By then MS and Nintendo will most likely be researching new consoles. So yeah, sure Sony you can beat the 360. Near the end of it's life!
